DESCRIPTION This study-unit supports the development of clinical skills and competencies in speech-language pathology through structured, practice-based learning that runs in parallel with Year 3, SEM 1 clinical placements. Students will engage in a range of learning activities, including clinical observations, simulations, problem-based learning (PBL), case discussions and guided tutorials to strengthen their ability to assess, plan, and deliver interventions across client populations.

The study-unit emphasises the application of clinical reasoning, the use of standardised and non-standardised assessment tools, professional documentation, and ethical decision-making. Through reflective practice and guided group work, students will consolidate their understanding of real-world clinical challenges and enhance their ability to respond flexibly and professionally in diverse settings. It provides a scaffolded environment to bridge academic learning and placement-based experiences, enabling students to take increasing ownership of their clinical development as they progress through their professional training.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to consolidate and advance students’ clinical competence in speech-language pathology. Through observation visits, simulation tasks, problem-based learning (PBL), and reflective practice, students will enhance their skills in clinical reasoning, assessment, intervention planning, documentation, and professional communication. Emphasis is placed on applying ethical and evidence-based practices across diverse client populations and service delivery contexts.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Explain principles of clinical reasoning and decision-making within the scope of SLP practice;
- Describe the stages and rationale of intervention planning across client populations;
- Identify and evaluate the use of standardised and non-standardised assessment tools;
- Discuss ethical and professional responsibilities in clinical contexts.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Apply clinical reasoning and make informed decisions in simulated or real case scenarios;
- Interpret and use assessment data to plan appropriate interventions;
- Communicate clearly and effectively through clinical documentation and oral presentation;
- Reflect on their clinical performance and identify strategies for improvement;
- Uphold ethical and professional standards in practice situations;
- Work collaboratively and engage in self-directed problem-solving using PBL approaches;
- Participate in structured clinical observation and simulation to consolidate clinical competencies;
- Engage actively in small-group problem-based learning to analyse clinical scenarios, generate hypotheses, and develop appropriate management plans;
